Location and Health Tracker For Cats and Dogs

For this assignment, I was tasked with creating a mock-up for an app that worked in tandem with a smart device. What I ended up making was an app that would ideally sync up with a Fitbit/tracker like device for pets (mainly cats and dogs). As I was researching for this project, I noticed a lot of products like this already exist. Their brand aesthetics though felt very cold and clinical looking, which felt kind of off to me. I kept that in mind when designing my app, I wanted mine to stand out and feel more playful and outdoors-ish.

I think I did a good capturing that kind of look. The vibrant shade of green I used for the main color and bright and inviting shades of blue, yellow and orange used as accents helped out a lot in that regard. I also think having some of the buttons look 3D with a false sense of depth (steps, bpm, sleep) supported giving the app a more tangible and toy-like quality. I wanted the app’s visuals to give off the impression that monitoring your pet’s health and being active can be fun, which I’d say I succeeded at.
Works for cats and dogs of various breeds.

I’d say overall I’m happy with this project. I think there is room for improvement though. More time should have been spent on the graphs themselves, animating them rather than having static images would liven things up. Having animation for all the 3D looking buttons when you press on them would help make things feel more uniform. Also, I’ve noticed for a lot of these app related projects, I’ve never had to design an actual app icon for like an app store or a phone which feels a bit strange, so there is that too.
Works as a pedometer, heart rate monitor and a sleep tracker.
