Cryptid Currency

A Mysterious Form of Cash

Client: ART 211 • Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

For this assignment, we had to redesign American money (two different dollar bills) using any kind of American iconography, serious or silly anything goes. I went with Aliens and where they were allegedly spotted, with the Flatwoods Monster being on the twenty and the Roswell Grey on the dollar. We had the option to do a third bill for extra credit. I wanted to do a five or a fifty with the Hopkinsville Goblin on it, but I was short on time.

One dollar bill front and back.

I enjoyed project even though I think mine ended up looking more like board game currency than actual money. I definitely want to revisit this project as well, I want to make that third bill and I also want to redesign the bills I already made to look a bit more eerie and sci-fi like. As they are now, I feel like they’re a little too cartoonish for my liking, mainly the fonts and the Eye of Providence are a little too chunky and friendly looking. I want them to look a little more mysterious and otherworldly. I’ve been messing around a bit in Adobe Illustrator to give them a more glitchy, found footage vibe. Also, creating the illustrations myself instead scrounging what I can find online would help them look more uniform. Woodblock or linocut cut prints would help give them a more jagged and spooky look, plus it be fun to have a mixed media graphic design project combining printmaking and digital art.
